Ashden Awards selects its shortlist for 2011

A shortlist of 32 trail-blazing projects has been announced to go through to the next stage of the 2011 Ashden Awards, the world's leading green energy prize.

This year's international applicants are from a range of countries spanning Africa, Asia and Latin America using innovative approaches to tackle poverty and climate change including creating fuel pellets from waste biomass, solar LED lanterns and small wind turbines.

UK applicants are spread across the country, from Brighton and Devon to Scotland and Lancashire. The ground-breaking initiatives range from an enterprise using biodiesel for community transport to programmes retrofitting homes and community groups that promote behaviour change.

The judging panel will meet during the next few weeks to determine the 16 finalists who will then receive short visits from the judges and technical assessors in the coming months. The invitation-only awards ceremony and one-day public conference will take place in London in June.
