48 green energy organisations around the world are in the running for a prestigious sustainable energy award
The longlist for the 2017 Ashden Awards has been announced with a total of 48 green energy organisations and programmes in countries as far-flung as Mongolia, Tajikistan, Liberia, Lesotho, Guatemala and Nepal.
The Awards celebrate global sustainable energy leaders and this year’s longlist ranges from a Malaysian architectural practice specialising in passive design to a UK designer of smart thermostats aimed at social housing, from a clean cook stove company in Ghana using fuel made from agricultural waste to a tea factory in Kenya using biomass briquettes.
This year there is a new international Powering Business Award recognising efforts by enterprises or programmes which provide or use clean energy or energy efficiency in the provision of goods and services through business activities. We also have a new UK Award rewarding organisations working on sustainable transport initiatives that are combating air pollution in towns and cities.

Shortlists for each Award category will be announced in March, with the Awards to be presented at a ceremony at the Royal Geographical Society in London on 15 June 2017.
Winners will receive a financial award of between £10,000 and £20,000, as well as a platform to promote their work and tailored support to grow even further.
Funders of the 2017 Ashden Awards include Citi, the Department for International Development, the Garfield Weston Foundation, Impax Asset Management, and the Waterloo Foundation.
Since the Ashden Awards were founded in 2001, we have rewarded 192 enterprises across the globe that so far have collectively improved the lives of more than 79 million people, saving more than 10 million tonnes of carbon emissions every year.
