Last week a new report was published predicting that one-third of common land animals could see dramatic losses this century because of climate change, with global temperatures set to rise 4C above preindustrial levels by 2100 if nothing is done to stem greenhouse gas emissions.

There is no doubting the increasing urgency of cutting worldwide CO2 emissions, but at a time of global uncertainty and financial insecurity, adding to people’s anxiety by scaremongering about climate change is counter-productive. Offering positive solutions, coupled with the conviction that we can change for the better is far more likely to engage people and achieve the emissions reductions we need.

Share this storyFor the first time, the world is making progress towards a comprehensive global treaty on climate change after negotiators struck a last-minute deal at talks in Durban. The agreement amongst 92 nations - rich and poor - is to negotiate an instrument with "legal force" requiring both developed and developing countries to cut their carbon emissions. The parties will need to agree terms by 2015, which will come into affect by 2020.
