Nurturing tomorrow’s sustainability leaders in UK schools

By Carla Jones, Communications Assistant

It would be putting it mildly to say that it has been a frustrating couple of weeks in the world of sustainability, with the outcomes of the Rio+20 Summit described by George Monbiot as ‘perhaps the greatest failure of collective leadership since the first world war’

Just how do you build leadership and where does it get nurtured? I was at the Eden Project in Cornwall last week where, at the final workshop of our Low Energy Sustainable Schools (LESS) CO2 programme,  schools in Devon and Cornwall showed that empowering pupils to take action and experience their own agency – in other words, creating an environment where students gain the confidence to make a difference – is key.

Saving energy at school – two South West primary schools share their experience and tips

Emily Lewis is a teacher at Gwinear school in Cornwall and Fran Rickwood is the Eco-Coordinator at Okehampton primary school in Devon. Both are signed up on the Ashden South West LESS CO2 schools programme designed to support 16 schools from Devon and Cornwall to make practical changes to reduce their energy consumption over the course of a year.

In a short interview, they both shared their experience of the journey so far.

Schools take action on energy in Devon and Cornwall

The sun streamed through the windows on Wednesday afternoon in a classroom in Okehampton College in Devon as teachers from schools across Devon and Cornwall sat down together for their third LESS CO2 workshop. At that moment the college was spending zero on its energy bills – the heating was off, lights in bright rooms were switched off and all the remaining electricity usage was covered by Okehampton’s 30Kw array of PV panels. With that inspiring backdrop, the participants got started. This session, almost a year after the start of the programme, was about reviewing results and supporting their progress to the next level of saving and generating energy sustainably as well as adding to their toolkit of curriculum resources on energy.

2011: a year of milestones for Ashden winners

It seems only a few short months ago that I was recapping the progress of Ashden winners in 2010, but somehow we’ve reached the end of another year! During 2011, Ashden winners have been just as successful. They’ve reached major milestones and continued to take their work in new directions as they promote sustainable energy.

Low Energy Sustainable Schools programme launches in Devon and Cornwall

Yesterday 14 schools from across Cornwall and Devon took part in the launch of the Ashden Awards Low Energy Sustainable Schools (LESS) CO2 programme. The session, hosted at Okehampton College in Devon,  was the beginning of a journey that will support local schools to reduce their CO2 emissions and energy bills through practical and step-by-step exercises. The expertise, of course, comes from our award-winners: Keith Webber, Community Technology Coordinator, of Okehampton College and Gill Harper, Business Manager, of St Columb Minor will both deliver at the workshops and offer mentoring in between. (Take a look at our films of their inspiring work).

Last year South Farnborough Infants followed our LESS CO2 programme. This year they're going even further

South Farnborough Infant School took part in last year’s South East LESS CO2 programme, which was designed to kick-start schools on a journey to reduce their CO2 emissions.

The school has just written to us, now that the LESS CO2 programme is over, with their to-do list for the coming year.

We thought it was well worth sharing:

  • Keep embedding sustainability into the curriculum – so far we've had great feedback from Year 1’s. Next we want to make a shared year group Green Board, and Green Summit to celebrate work by each year group.
  • Keep loaning energy monitors to parents. This has been a success - one winning family made a massive 32% energy saving in the second week of the loan and were rewarded with a top-of-the-range brand new monitor.
  • Install sun tubes in corridors by Easter 2011. We’ve already spent £7,000 this year so far on eco improvements to the building, including eco lighting in the main corridors.
  • Get together with our feeder schools to bring sustainability into the forefront of the South Farnborough schools staff, children and parents' minds, and look at sustainable procurement possibilities.
  • Make the most out of our monitoring by installing an Energy Display Meter and using the data in our curriculum.

This year we are heading down to the South West to roll out the LESS CO2 programme with 15 schools in Devon and Cornwall.

Five more schools on way to becoming sustainable with Ashden's LESS CO2 programme

Staff from five schools joined three Ashden Award winners yesterday at Epsom Primary school, Surrey, for the final session of our pilot ‘LESS CO2’ programme.

For the past year LESS CO2 has drawn on the experience of Richard Dunne from Ashley Primary, Stephen Green from Ringmer College and Paula Owens from Eastchurch Primary – all previous Ashden Schools Award winners - to help a group of schools in Surrey reduce energy use and incorporate an ethos of sustainability throughout their schools. Yesterday's session was about motivation, feedback and reflection.

Over the past year the schools have made some impressive changes. Brookwood Primary School, for instance, has reduced its CO2 emissions by 50% and has just received its green flag. The use of the 'Current Cost' energy monitors that each school received at the start of this programme has undoubtedly had an impact.

Rachel Clack, a teacher from Epsom Primary School, said:
