Life after an Ashden Award: an interview with Mohamed Parpia of Zara Solar

By Julia Hawkins, Ashden PR and Digital Media Manager
During our Awards week at the end of May we were delighted to welcome back Mohammed Parpia, whose company Zara Solar won an Ashden Award in 2007 for rolling out solar energy to the rural poor in Tanzania. Powerful images bring home reality of life without light

Imagine wandering through the dark, the night time sounds of crickets and chattering in the background. With a single solar lamp to light your way, you begin to uncover the shapes and sights of night-time in remote Northern Ghana.  Images of teachers marking schoolwork by torchlight, doctors performing surgery under a single lamp and busy road intersections visible with just headlights all come to life by the moving light of your lantern.

Which way for UK’s solar energy?

There’s mounting concern in the solar industry as talk spreads that the Government will today announce cuts to the feed in tariffs by more than a half. This would more than double the pay-back period for householders and reduce their returns from about 7 to 4 per cent. It looks as if the change could be introduced in December, which Ashden Award winner Jeremy Leggett, CEO of Solarcentury thinks will be a killer according to his Twitter feed: “Halving is bad enough, December is a killer. Thousands will be out of work… this is an existential threat for most in our industry.”
