Ashden Indian Collective ushers in ‘International Year of Sustainable Energy for All’ to Asia

We set up the Ashden Indian Collective (AIC) to bring together our previous winners in India so that they can act as a unified voice in influencing energy policy in India. When  the UN International Year of Sustainable Energy for All was launched in Asia recently, the AIC played a key role highlighting three pillars of sustainable energy in India: energy access for all, energy efficiency and a greater role for renewable energy.

Powerful images bring home reality of life without light

Imagine wandering through the dark, the night time sounds of crickets and chattering in the background. With a single solar lamp to light your way, you begin to uncover the shapes and sights of night-time in remote Northern Ghana.  Images of teachers marking schoolwork by torchlight, doctors performing surgery under a single lamp and busy road intersections visible with just headlights all come to life by the moving light of your lantern.

Four ways the 2012 UN Year of Sustainable Energy For All can change the world

This week the UN launched the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All.  UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon called on the world’s governments to tackle energy poverty and boost the innovation needed to make sure all energy comes from clean sources.

There is no doubt that the tide is starting to turn on clean energy.  Reports last year from the IPCC, UNDP and UNEP showed that globally, investment in decentralised clean energy is growing and that both investors and entrepreneurs are recognising its economic potential.

The biggest benefits of sustainable energy will be felt by the world’s poorest.  The work of Ashden award winners, leaders in this field, bring up four main areas where benefits are being experienced:

Use a solar lamp at our exhibition 'Life Without Lights'

Ever thought about how much light you need to power your life? Award-winning American photographer Peter DiCampo visited Northern Ghana to find out just how hard it is to live without access to something we take for granted. His images give insight into the experience of the 1.4 billion people who currently live without electricity; people relying on candles, kerosene lanterns or torches to carry out daily activities.
