Applying for an Ashden Award: FAQs
How much does it cost to apply for an Ashden Award?
There is no fee to apply for an award. All you will need to do is make time to complete the form, and then answer any questions we might ask you after you have submitted your form.
What’s the deadline for applications?
The deadline for 2017 is 11.59pm on Tuesday 8 November 2016.
When will I hear if my application is successful?
You will hear between late November and early December if you have made it through the first round of assessments. The first judging meetings are then held in early February, after which you will hear if you have made it through to the Shortlist. Winners will be announced shortly before the Awards Ceremony in June.
Can I make more than one application?
Yes, you can make more than one application, providing they are for different programmes or businesses, if you are involved with more than one. Please do not submit two applications for the same work.
How do I know which category of award to apply for?
To apply for a UK Award, you must be based in the UK and your customers/clients must also be in the UK. Read our detailed information for applicants here.
To apply for an International Award, your customers/clients must be in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, South Asia or South-East Asia - see list of eligible countries. It does not matter where your organisation’s headquarters are. Read our detailed information for applicants here.
Didn’t the travel award used to have a UK and European focus?
Yes but for the first time last year we had an International Sustainable Travel Award instead, supported by Eurostar, to celebrate enterprises and programmes implementing sustainable solutions which are changing how people travel around in Latin America, Africa and Asia Pacific.
Can I view the questions in the form without filling it all in?
Yes. In the ‘Information for applicants’ document you’ll find a link to a PDF of the whole form.
Please note that this PDF shows all the questions you could possibly see on the form – in practice, you will not need to answer them all, as some are hidden, based on your answers to earlier questions.
What will happen at the judging visit?
The visit will take up most of a day for UK, and two to three days for International. It will include meetings with key staff such as your chief executive, financial officer, the person in charge of the work submitted for an award, and other employees. It will also include seeing the work submitted in operation, usually through site visits, and meeting customers/clients.

For all but one of our Awards, the work submitted for the Award must have been been running for at least one year. The only exception to this is the UK Award for Innovation, where we allow applications for technologies, products or services that have been available for less than a year, providing they are available for purchase and not prototypes or pilots.
